“Home in Time” captures first prize for February’s playwright

This past weekend saw Cube Salon’s playwright partner for February walk away with top prize in the Ottawa Little Theatre’s one-act playwriting contest. Sterling Lynch was the man in the spotlight as the national award was announced two weeks before its world premiere at the Cube Salon on Hamilton where it will appear as a staged reading and centrepiece of the “tempus” show on February 13.

Cube Salon had the opportunity to ask Sterling about the process of winning the award, and what it was that he thought made the script so compelling for the jury. Here’s what he told us:

Writing contests can really be a crap shoot sometimes. Often, there is no way of knowing in advance what the adjudicators are going to look for. You either just write whatever you want and hope for the best or you submit something fashionable.

OLT to their inestimable credit gave very clear criteria about what they wanted. So I wrote a play that was artistically satisfying for me and met their criteria. My best guess is that it even made the process easier for the adjudicators. OLT deserves high praise not only for running the contest but also for the way they ran it.

Season details

The series: Cube Salon is a series of performance evenings themed around staged readings, music, and poetry. Each evening is presented in the viewing salon of Ottawa’s Cube Gallery and is hosted by spoken word artist Kel Parsons.
“tempus” – February 13
Step outside the bounds of the temporal as you consider a choice so exhilarating that it just may change how you think about your own mortality. Cube Salon presents a staged reading from playwright Sterling Lynch’s “Home In Time”, winner of the Ottawa Little Theatre’s national competition for best new one-act play. With musical support from recording artist John Carroll.
“memento” -March 13
Complimented by a newly-commissioned score from singer-songwiter Johnny Gillies, this work is about how the souvenirs accumulated in a long and full life take on a powerful and unexpected presence in this fresh new play by Karen Balcome. It will be our first salon night in the new Cube, 1285 Wellington Street, and will also feature the works of sculptor Bruce Garner.
“carpe diem” April 17
“Procrastini” is the name of Jonathan Koensgen’s playwriting debut on the Ottawa stage. Since he was first cast professionally at the age of 11, Koensgen has racked up stage and screen credits too numerous to list, and Cube Salon is thrilled to be working with him as he turns his theatre craft to the written page. With musical support from recording artist John Carroll.

Star of GMEN Defectives has a Valentine’s date with Cube Salon

Actor, director, producer; Sterling Lynch (that’s him on the right holding the pistol) is all of that, and a lot more.

Did we mention playwright? With plays in production as far away as Phoenix, Arizona, Sterling’s writing is becoming known to audiences far and wide, and that is why we are proud to feature the world premiere of scenes from his latest play at the upcoming Cube Salon on February 13.

Supported by singer-songwriter John Carroll and spoken-word artist Kel Parsons, Sterling and his cast will be presenting a staged reading from “Home in Time” for the Cube Salon audience. Performed on the evening before Valentine’s, it’s about a love of an altogether different dimension.

Click our tickets section to reserve your seat for the show, and check the reviews and previews of previous Cube Salon evenings.

We’ll hope to see you on the 13th!
